3D Printing Rules and Guidelines

1. Eligibility
- Current Tottenville HS students and staff, verified in person in D311 with a school ID.
- Accounts must be approved before submitting requests, use a non-DOE email for notifications.
- One active job per student at a time, unless a teacher sponsor requests otherwise.
2. What we will print
- Class projects, club work, prototypes, and educational models.
- Personal items are allowed if they respect all rules and do not delay academic prints.
3. What we will not print
- Objects that are unsafe, harmful, or look like a weapon, including props that resemble weapons.
- Objects that violate law or others’ intellectual property.
- Objects that require post-processing the lab cannot safely perform.
4. File requirements
- Accepted formats, .stl, .3mf, or .obj. Include scale in millimeters.
- Models must be manifold, no self-intersections or non-manifold edges.
- Include link to screenshots of the oriented model or any special notes in your request in the "Special Instructions".
5. Size and time limits
Build volume per printer, for example Bambu Carbon, 256 × 256 × 256 mm.
Maximum print time per job, 12 hours. Larger academic jobs may be split or require teacher approval.
6. Materials and colors
- Standard material, PLA. PETG or TPU by permission only.
- Color selection depends on current inventory, single color per job unless noted.
- We may adjust orientation, supports, or scale for printability and material usage.
7. Submission and queue
- Submit online at /request, with a link to the file publically accessible.
- Requests enter the queue after a staff review. You will receive status updates, Submitted, In Queue, Printing, Ready.
- Academic deadlines can be noted in person. Teacher-verified deadlines may be prioritized.
8. Print settings defaults
- Layer height, 0.20 mm, shells, 2, infill, 15 percent, nozzle, 0.4 mm.
- Support, only where necessary. Brim or raft at staff discretion for adhesion.
- We may tweak settings to reduce failures and conserve filament.
9. Turnaround and pickups
- Typical turnaround, 1 to 4 school days, depends on queue and complexity.
- Pickup in D311 during posted hours. Jobs not picked up within 7 school days may be recycled or given away.
10. Failed prints and remakes
- We will reprint one time for printer error or slicing issues.
- Design issues may require a new request after you revise the model.
- If a reuqest is to ever be cancelled, a detailed note on why will be attached to the cancelation email
11. Academic priority
Coursework, teacher sponsored projects, and club deliverables have priority during peak periods.
12. Lab conduct and safety
- Follow staff instructions, respect equipment, and keep food and drinks away from printers.
- No unsupervised operation. Violations can lead to suspension of lab access.
13. Intellectual property
You must have the rights to the models you submit. By submitting, you grant the club permission to process and print your file for the stated purpose.
14. Privacy and data
We store the files and request metadata needed to process jobs and audit usage. We do not share student data outside the school program. To request deletion, contact the email above.
